I have finally completed my coursework on Romeo & Juliet. Below is the introduction to the essay. It is 7 page long and took me 2 weeks to plan, structure and then finalise it using some sources from the internet and help from my teachers.

Romeo & Juliet, introduction:

Romeo and Juliet is a story based on romance, tragedy and danger. In my essay (Act I Scene V), I will be looking and explaining Romeo and Juliet’s relationship and how they fall in love with each other. I will also be looking at the causes that link to their death, which also is stated in the prologue: A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life”. Shakespeare increases the dramatic tension where Romeo is speaking to Mercutio of his dreams and he says something to the extent of “something is going to happen tonight at this party that will lead to my death.” Even though the party hasn’t begun, we already get a sense of tension and fear, where Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time.

Capulet and the Montague’s are great enemies; therefore we can see that something terrible or bad is going to occur in the play (which links to Romeo and Juliet’s death afterwards). I will also be discussing the characters’ statuses and the social and historical context.

In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, about two loves struck teenagers whom aren’t able to be together due to their families’ feud/ social situation. There are two key themes that of love and hate. Before Romeo and Juliet meet, the audience is only aware that he is a Montague and that she is a Capulet. This adds to the scene being so dramatically effective as do other happenings throughout the length of the scene. These include the speech of Capulet and the happy and joyous mood of the party, The romantic speech of Romeo, The hatred and harshness of Tybalt’s speech, a direct contrast with that of Romeo’s and the drama when the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet first meet.
